Getting Around in San Francisco

During a recent long weekend in San Francisco, one of Kongo’s favorite cities, he took note of all the ways to get around in the City.  First, never ever, ever try to drive yourself from one spot to the next and park.  Although you can probably do this, it is going to cost you more money than a 49er ever made and if you’re unfamiliar with San Francisco or are uncomfortable driving on very steep hills it is not going to be much fun.  Besides the cable car, which is pretty much synonymous with San Francisco, there’s many ways to quickly move you and your party about the City without spending a fortune in parking fees.

Old style trolley cars run up and down Market Street and to the Wharf areas.
Pedicabs are all over downtown
Kind of geeky but an interesting way to see the tourist areas
The ultimate tourist transport
Cabs always work. Relatively inexpensive and plentiful.
Hop on/Hop off tour bus is a great way to get a quick overview of the City
Kongo swings from a handstrap inside a cable car
And of course, there is going to be a lot of walking. Get some good shoes to avoid blisters and have a bag big enough to hold your shopping treasures
However you get around in San Francisco, you’re going to love it!
Travel safe.  Have fun.

  1. I love the cable cars and once (20 years ago) when I lived for awhile on Russian hill I would sometimes take the cable car as ordinary transportation. It is fun to do but now it is such a tourist attraction that it’s quite a chore to get on one. I would NEVER take the cable car from a turn-around unless I someone put a gun to my head and made me wait for an hour in a line with a bunch of weird Jesus freaks talking about the end of the world or something. Still, it’s a great city and I Bart if possible and drive if I’m going somewhere outside a reasonable range of BART.

  2. Very useful and informative! I think driving around a place like San Fran would be more hassle than it’s worth … luckily, it seems SF is as blessed as Vancouver, Canada for transport options!

  3. Great info! Mostly I’ve driven there, but you are right about the parking. 🙁 Will try these other options next time.

    1. I leave the car at the hotel ($50/day thank you very much) and never see it again until it’s time to go to the airport. Sometimes we don’t even pick up a car and just take a taxi (or you could BART from OAK). The only time you really need a car in SFO is if you’re heading over to Marin, Alameda, or Contra Costa Counties or heading up to the wine country.

  4. Cable cars are the best! Although I did become pretty good at making my way around town (with megabucks for parking garages). I love how you showed the complete variety of transportation modes!
