Missy Finally Coming Home

Missy tries on the Chinaman’s Hat but it doesn’t fit

After a week in Maui and Oahu with Mrs. Kongo and Betty, Missy the Monkey is finally coming home to San Diego this evening (just in time to hit rush hour traffic after the Monday Night Football Chargers vs. Broncos at Qualcomm Stadium!). But before she heads to the airport, Missy took a drive around Oahu to see what she could see. Above, she monkeys around posing in front of Mokol’i Island offshore of Kualoa Point in Kane’ohe Bay, commonly knows as “Chinaman’s Hat” for its likeness to the straw hats that Chinese immigrants wore.

Missy gets lunch at Giovanni’s (Giovanni’s Original White Shrimp Truck) which started selling shrimp out of a truck on the North Shore in 1993. It is one of several individually owned trucks that sell local, fresh shrimp along the Kamehameha Highway near the town of Kahuku.

Missy grabs an ear of hot roasted corn while waiting for her lunch of shrimp. A perfect pairing.

Missy stops at Sunset Beach at Oahu’s North Shore to take in a few rays and hang out with the big wave surfers. Unfortunately she found that she blended so well with the sand that she was afraid of getting trampled. Plus, the sand was HOT HOT HOT!

The beach chair is much better. Her monkey buns are not getting burned and Missy doesn’t have to worry about someone stepping on her.

The girls stop at the famous Matsumoto General Store in Haleiwa for some shaved ice and a T-shirt.

After a busy day, Missy makes it safely back to the hotel bar at the Hyatt Waikiki.

Even though there is a lot to do in Waikiki, to really see Oahu you need to rent a car fora day and drive around the island. Missy’s tour was pretty much a trek to see how many eating spots she could get to in one day along with a few hours to buff her tan up so that people at home would really believe she had been in Hawaii for a week and not in a spa the whole time.

Speaking of spas, Missy, Mrs. Kongo, and Betty had one more spa treatment (mud wraps this time) after they got back to the hotel and is now worried about how to get all that mud out of her fur before she reunites with Kongo. What’s a monkey to do?

On the positive side, the girls did walk over 75 miles helping Betty’s training regimen for an upcoming 3-day walk to support research for breast cancer. Go Betty!
