El Matador Beach in Malibu is one of Southern California’s secret spots. Located just north of famous Zuma Beach, the much smaller and more secluded El Matador State Beach attracts visitors with cosy coves, caves, fantastic rock shapes and sea birds.
There’s something about piers. If there is one on a beach it becomes a destination. Those who like to walk on beaches (remember those old profiles in lonely hearts columns…”I like long walks on the beach…”) seem to always gravitate toward pilings that stretch out over the water. Kongo likes piers too.
So the monkey gets up at the crack of dawn today to capture some shots of the sunrise over the Gulf of Mexico from his hotel balcony in Cancun. Tropical sunrises are always a favorite pastime and he wasn’t disappointed this morning even though Mrs. Kongo did make some protesting noises when Kongo started rooting around for his tripod at 5:30 A.M. Actually sunrises look pretty much exactly like sunsets except, in Kongo’s opinion, the light is a bit softer and there are a lot fewer people out and about.
Kongo is in Florida for a few weeks and got up early this morning to capture the sunrise at the beach at Big Amanda Island northeast of Jacksonville. Pam, one of Kongo’s favorite bloggers, told him about this beach over dinner in San Diego a few months ago, so the monkey was really happy to finally get a chance to see it in person.
