Last Sunset of 2013 (NOT)

  After finishing up the year’s last conference call, the last email, the last spreadsheet review, and while East Coast monkeys were queuing up for a good spot in Times Square, Kongo headed out to Sunset Cliffs in late afternoon to capture the last sunset of 2013.  As the image above suggests, that didn’t work out so well.  But there were other good things before the fog rolled in.  Read on to see. San Elijo Lagoon

The monkey had to make a run up to Olivenhain to replenish his koi food stock and stopped off at San Elijo Lagoon to take a few pictures.  San Elijo is a wetlands conservancy area that is a major stopover for birds on the flyway between Canada and South America.  While no species are migrating this time of year there were some Egrets to be found.

This idyllic little stretch of water just above the Old Mission Dam in San Diego is a perfect place for Snowy Egrets.  Kongo has seen many of them here and they rank way up there in the monkey’s list of favorite birds.  The only thing missing is the bird.  Kongo made a trip to this spot near his house in the late afternoon to catch the light and find an Egret.  Or a Great Heron which he’s also spotted here before.  Not today.  He waited until the parking lot gate was about to close and packed it in.  Cocktail hour…
