Ailsa’s theme this week is statues. Kongo has observed that statues are like photo magnets.  People with cameras can’t avoid snapping a picture. Take 2 on Weekly Photo Challenge: Reflections

IMG_0811-5Kiev. This is a subject that gives us all something to reflect upon indeed. This image is of the Mother of the Motherland Statue overlooking the Dnieper River in Kiev, Ukraine. This mother of all statues was built by the Soviet Union and inaugurated in 1981 to memorialize the millions who died in the Great Patriotic War (World War II) but it’s presence today may be giving us more to reflect upon than war dead.   Continue reading “Take 2 on Weekly Photo Challenge: Reflections”

Cee’s Fun Foto Challenge: White

Cee’s Fun Foto Challenge this week is WHITE.  Above is St. Andrew’s Church in Kiev, Ukraine. Kiev has many beautiful churches but this Baroque beauty at the top of St. Andrew’s Descent, an artsy neighborhood in Kiev, is one of Kongo’s favorites.  It was built in 1745 by the Russian Empress Elizabeth who needed a private church for her daily worship near a palace she kept nearby. The Monkey Goes Viral

So the monkey makes it back from the East Coast and checks his email and blog stats this morning and finds out that hundreds of new hits and emails are coming in.  What’s happening?  It turns out that Reddit user Nasdaf made a combined image of a before and after shot of Independence Square in Kiev using a photo Kongo took of the square during his visit to Ukraine in November 2012 and one from Reuters photographer Olga Yakimovich.  Nasdaf’s dramatic image above shows the square in more peaceful times against the chaos of this week.  Kongo’s part of the … Continue reading The Monkey Goes Viral
