Pelican Love

_MG_2276You can tell it’s pelican mating season just by looking at them.  The throats of California Brown Pelicans turn bright red and stay that way until after the eggs are in the nest. Both male and female pelicans help build the nest and care for the young.  Kongo spied this good looking pelican looking to hook up along the shore at La Jolla Cove in San Diego late this afternoon. Weekly Photo Challenge: Perspective

The WordPress Weekly Photo Challenge today is PERSPECTIVE.  The first photo shows the La Jolla shore yesterday afternoon with blooming flowers in the foreground and crashing waves against the rocks in the background.  For the second photo I stood up and zoomed in on the rocks to catch the next wave to come crashing in and the effect makes it seems like the surf is much larger surf than it actually is.  It’s all a matter of perspective.  See more perspective images at the Weekly Photo Challenge.   Continue reading Weekly Photo Challenge: Perspective

Pinnipeds!

Kongo paid a visit to La Jolla today and found several brand new seal pups! These harbor seal species are part of the pinnipedia order and birthing season in Southern California is between late January through the end of April. At the Children’s Pool Beach the city ropes off a section for the seals during birthing season but these seals were on a nearby stretch of sand and people were getting fairly close. Seals have very sharp teeth and mother seals can be aggressive if they feel their young are threatened so it’s best to stay back and approach with only a long lens. Besides, both the mother’s and baby seals need time to rest after the birthing ordeal so please leave them in peace and watch from afar. Continue reading “Pinnipeds!”
