Zoo Birding

Okay, Kongo gets that serious birders will look down their beak in a scathing fashion about the notion of going birding at the zoo.  And given that Kongo is just back from touring the Galapagos Islands where the birds were everywhere in the wild he admits that it is a bit of a let down to go to the zoo now although the San Diego Zoo happens to be one of Kongo’s favorite places and where else can you get a close up of a Hyacinth Macaw (above) and Metallic Starlings (read on) on the same day? Cactus Garden in Blue and Green

Yesterday afternoon Kongo revisited one of his favorite spots in San Diego.  The cactus garden in Balboa Park.  The wonderful place with unusual cacti from all over the world was started by Kate Sessions, the mother of Balboa Park, way back in the 1920s,  Some of her original plantings are here.  Kongo challenged himself to try to do the whole shoot in only blue and green. Cabrillo National Monument

Thankfully, the marine layer has returned to San Diego so our early mornings are back to the traditional “May Gray” and moving toward “June Gloom.”  The temperatures are down from triple digits to the more usual mid-70s and the fires across the county have abated. All is now well on the West Coast which probably means its time for the monkey to start traveling again and in fact he’s off to Philadelphia in the morning.
