Secret Gardens of Balboa Park

Visitors to San Diego’s Balboa Park have much to thank the original planners early who worked tirelessly early in the last century to lay down the bones of today’s wonderful setting.  Visionaries like Kate Sessions, the “Mother of Balboa Park,” envisioned a broad urban park that rivaled the grand parks of Europe and the East Coast.  Throughout what is now Balboa Park they planted hundreds of trees, laid out stately gardens, and hidden alcoves that the public could enjoy year round.  They were known as “progressives” and how progressive they were!  Read on to discover a few of the many gardens you may have missed in your visits to Balboa Park. Waiting For The Light

Kongo is inspired by the work of amateur San Diego photographer Mark Shimazu.  One of Mark’s photos that really dazzled Kongo was from a post Mark did about a month ago.  It was taken from Cabrillo Bridge in Balboa Park looking toward downtown San Diego just after sunset.  Check out Mark’s photo here.  So last evening Kongo packed his tripod and headed toward the park to see if he could do something similar.  His effort is shown above.  The streak of light is a Delta 757 on final approach to the airport.   Continue reading “Waiting For The Light”

Botanical Building Revisited

One of Kongo’s favorite spots and a great place to take pictures of flowers is the Botanical Building in San Diego’s Balboa Park.  On a sunny Saturday before Mother’s Day the monkey spent some time browsing and fighting off other photographers for the best views of the orchids and other flowers in bloom.  Continue on for the rest of the photos.
