The Monkey as a Tourist

20121001-100126.jpg
Kongo often thinks of himself as a sophisticated world traveller, suave and graceful, swinging through the vines of the world casting a narrow eye at the regular monkey tourists, the lesser primates. Truth be told, deep inside Kongo’s simian heart lies a world-class primate tourist with a just a lot of miles and airline wings as these photos reveal.

Cruising the Danube

Kongo returned a week ago from a two-week river and land tour through Central Europe to the areas on or near the River Danube. The Danube originates in Germany’s Black Forest and flows 2,872 kilometers to end in the Black Sea. Along the way it passes through four capitals (Kongo visited three of them) and ten countries. Kongo travelled from Budapest, Hungary to Regensberg, Germany and than went up the Rhine-Main canal to Nuremberg. There was a side trip to Salzburg and the final three days were in Prague which is not near the Danube at all. Everything else was on or within sight of the river.

The picture above was taken in Budapest looking up river on the Danube from the Buda side of the Danube. Despite the blue cast caused by late afternoon lighting and a bit of Photoshop, the Danube is not blue, despite the best musical intentions of Johann Strauss.

Karlovy Vary

On the way to Prague Kongo stops off at Karlovy Vary in the Bohemian region of the Czech Republic. Karlovy Vary, also known as Carlsbad. is famous for it’s opulent hotels, shops, pilsner beer, and spas. What a beautiful place. Nestled between scenic forested hills, Carlsbad is built about 13 major hot springs along with about 300 other more minor springs. The hotels and shopping are equal to Beverly Hills and Rodeo Drive. Mrs. Kongo was starting to hyper-ventilate until Kongo led her to lunch at the Grand Hotel Pupp and a walking tour of the “waters.” Continue reading “Karlovy Vary”

Nuremberg

20120916-080146.jpg
On his last day aboard the AMA DOLCE, Kongo visits the German city of Nuremberg in the state of Bavaria. Nuremberg was almost completely destroyed by Allied bombing in World War II since it was known as the heart of the Nazi movement, a strategic rail center, and a source of industry for the Nazi war machine. The fountain above, built in 1499, was one of the few original works to survive in the old downtown area and it was completely covered with a protective concrete blast wall.
