The Train to Machu Picchu

Kongo rode the train from Ollantaytameo to Aguas Calliente to reach the base of the mountains that hide Machu Picchu.  Along the way it travels next to the Rio Urubamba which eventually becomes the Amazon River.  The mountain shots on this post were taken through the windows of the train as it passed through the narrow valley leading to Aguas Callientie (Hot Waters) AKA Machupicchu Town.

Kongo made this panorama image from three shots taken yesterday morning from a perch   high above the ancient city near a stone building known as the Caretaker Hut.  While there he met some Canadians who were relaxing at the site after spending several weeks in remote areas of Peru installing solar panels in villages that have never had electricity before. Crossing off the Bucket List

Yesterday Kongo was able to check-off the number one item on his bucket list.  Machu Picchu!  On an absolutely glorious day the monkey joined thousands of other pilgrims sweating and hiking the steep mountain trails and was finally able to creep out on a terrace overlook to snap about 100 of these iconic Machu Picchu images.  He was in heaven, or at least halfway there considering the altitude. Mucho Gusto Cusco

Kongo finally arrives at his cute little centuries old boutique hotel in the middle of the Cusco historic district. The usual travel adventures are now safely in the rear view mirror.  Late flights due to thunderstorms in Atlanta, late flights from Lima to Cusco caused by too many airplanes needing fuel (huh?) and the usual delays when group (groupo) traveling as  you can only move as quickly as the slowest member of the entourage.  Nothing serious but don’t question efficiencies about customs clearance or hotel check ins in certain parts of the world (this being one of them).  Of course none of that really matters after you finally get to your destination!  Kongo is very mañana and laid back now.
